Minneriya National Park is famous for “The Gathering,” one of Asia’s largest seasonal elephant congregations, drawn to the ancient reservoir as the dry season lowers water levels elsewhere. Herds numbering in the hundreds converge on the exposed grassy banks, creating a spectacular wildlife event set against a backdrop of open grassland, scattered forest and distant misty hills.
